Feeling Stuck? 2 Powerful Steps to Break Free and Move Forward

Steph was stuck. On the surface, she had it all together—great job, good salary—but inside, she was a wreck. She obsessed over losing her job, terrified of looking incompetent. Her performance review was coming up, and instead of preparing, she did what most people do when anxiety takes over:

  • Binge-watched Netflix every night

  • Ate way too much ice cream

  • Played out every worst-case scenario in her head

  • Had constant headaches and trouble sleeping

Sound familiar? The truth is, everyone has different ways of dealing with stress, anxiety, and fear. But if you’re stuck, here’s what you really want:

  • If you are depressed, you want hope.

  • If you are anxious, you want peace.

  • If you are angry, you want justice.

When you're stuck, you need a roadmap to get unstuck. Let’s get straight to it.

The Heart of the Issue

Biblical counseling is one-on-one discipleship with a plan and a purpose.

  • The plan: Share biblical truth and love with someone who’s struggling.

  • The purpose: Real, lasting change.

In the Bible, the heart is the command center of your life—it’s where your desires, motivations, and beliefs live. Your thoughts, emotions, and actions flow from it. That’s why Proverbs 4:23 tells us:

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

When your desires are misaligned with God’s truth, you struggle. Your heart becomes self-centered instead of Christ-centered. Instead of asking, “What pleases God?” the focus shifts to, “What pleases me?”

That mindset leads to a downward spiral—negative thoughts, destructive emotions, and harmful behaviors. So how do you break free?

Step 1: Repent—Change Your Thinking

Nothing changes without a shift in mindset. Jesus illustrated this in the parable of the Prodigal Son.

The younger son demanded his inheritance, wasted it all, and ended up broke, starving, and feeding pigs. Then comes the turning point:

"When he came to his senses…" (Luke 15:17)

That is repentance. A shift in thinking. He saw things clearly and changed direction.

If you want to get unstuck, you have to be willing to rethink everything—your beliefs, your patterns, and your approach. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings real heart change, but it starts with being honest about what is keeping you trapped.

Step 2: Identify the Root Cause

What is actually driving your anxiety, anger, or discouragement? It is not just stress. It is the deeper issue—your ruling desires.

Ask yourself:

  1. Am I living with a “Not my will, but Yours be done” mindset? (Luke 22:42)

  2. Or am I clinging to comfort, approval, control, or security?

When you chase these things above God’s truth, you set yourself up for failure. If you get what you want, pride takes over. If you don’t, you spiral into anxiety, anger, or self-loathing.

The Prodigal Son demanded his way. His older brother sneered in self-righteousness. Both were ruled by desires that had nothing to do with God.

Your Next Move

Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what is really running the show in your heart. Write it down. Look at the patterns—negative thoughts, destructive habits, and toxic emotions. Because what rules your heart, rules you.
