A Counselor Who Gets Panic Attacks? You Bet.

Yes, even a counselor can have panic attacks. I know this firsthand. For years, I was stuck in a cycle of heart-pounding, full-blown panic. Today, it’s a rare experience for me, and that’s why I wrote HELP! I Get Panic Attacks.

This mini-book walks you through how my panic started, the biblical solutions I discovered, and practical assignments to help you overcome panic. You’ll also find a short section on medication (reviewed by a medical doctor). My goal? To help you break free and get your life back, better than ever.

Here’s an Excerpt—Because You Need to Know You’re Not Alone

My Panic Attacks Started With a Job Promotion

New job. New title. New stress. I had just been promoted to managing editor of a health and food magazine. The woman I replaced, Suzy, moved up to executive editor. Should have been a great day, right? Wrong.

From the moment I stepped into the office, Suzy glared at me like I’d stolen her lunch money.

Did I do something wrong? Why is she acting so weird? Does she hate me? Will I lose my dream job already?

By 5 p.m., I was emotionally drained and desperate to escape. I jumped into my blue hatchback, blasted some music, and headed home—my “safe place.” Like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, I whispered, There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.

Then, out of nowhere, it hit.

Heart racing. Sweat pouring. Knees shaking. A crushing sense of doom. My mind went haywire as I neared a tight curve: Drive into the ditch, Lucy. Just do it.

Wait. What?! Was I suicidal? No. But panic was messing with my brain. I fought back: Stay on the highway, Lucy. Just get home. You can make it.

Sound familiar? If you’ve ever been blindsided by panic, you know how terrifying it is. But here’s what helped me—and what can help you, too.

Three Truths That Helped Me Break Free

  1. You’re Not Alone.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Everyone battles fear at some level. Panic attacks don’t mean you’re weak or alone. You’re human.

  2. Panic Attacks Stem from Faulty Thinking—But That Can Change.

Fearful thoughts fuel panic. The good news? By God’s grace, you can replace those fear-based lies with truth. It won’t happen overnight, but with persistence, it’s possible.

  3. God Can Help You Overcome Fear.

Unless your panic has a physical cause (more on that in the book), fear is the root issue, and God is bigger than your fear. Aligning your thoughts with His truth makes the difference.

Your Panic Can Have Purpose

Believe it or not, God can use your panic for good. How? By equipping you to comfort others who struggle. This verse changed my perspective:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (2 Corinthians 1:3–4)

Maybe it’s hard to believe right now, but God sees your struggle. He can deliver you. Is it easy? No. Will it take effort? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely. Panic doesn’t have to define you. It can be the doorway to peace—the kind only Jesus, the Prince of Peace, can give.
